English and Filipino Tongue Twisters

Using tongue twisters for Grade 3 (approx. 8–9 years old) is a highly effective teaching strategy because it turns rigorous speech practice into a fun game.

Here are the key reasons why they are important for this age group:

1. Improves Pronunciation & Articulation

Grade 3 is a critical time for refining speech clarity. Tongue twisters force the mouth, tongue, and lips to work hard to form specific sounds. This “mouth gym” helps correct common speech issues, such as lisps or interchanging sounds (like f and p or s and sh).

2. Develops Reading Fluency

At this grade level, students are transitioning from “learning to read” to “reading to learn.” Tongue twisters help them recognize patterns and flow. Because they are repetitive, students can practice reading quickly without stumbling, which builds confidence for reading longer texts.

3. Fun & Low-Stress Environment

Tongue twisters are designed to be difficult. When a student mistakes “sushi” for “shoe-she,” it is funny, not embarrassing. This lowers the “affective filter” (anxiety), making shy students more willing to participate because messing up is part of the fun.

4. Teaches Alliteration

Tongue twisters are the best examples of alliteration (repetition of initial consonant sounds). This is a literary device introduced in elementary grades.

• Example: “Peter Piper picked a peck…” teaches the P sound and the concept of repetition.

5. Strengthens Listening Skills

To repeat a tongue twister correctly, a student has to listen very intently to the teacher’s example. This sharpens their auditory processing and focus.
